Fall in Lake Placid is full of crisp autumn air and some of the most vibrant foliage in all of North America. The area is transformed with beautiful shades of deep red, burnt orange, and gold leaves. The change starts in September, with late September into early October being the peak time to visit. Come experience autumn in the Adirondack Mountains—there are so many ways to see the changing leaves and embrace the season!
One of the best ways to see the High Peaks region painted in fall colors is to ride the gondola up Whiteface Mountain. You will travel directly up and overlook forests bursting with autumn colors. Once at the top, you can step out onto the observation deck for panoramic views of the area. On a clear day, you can even see into Vermont.
A drive up Veterans Memorial Highway provides many picture-perfect opportunities to capture the stunning fall foliage. When you reach the end of the highway, you will find the 4,610' Cafe, where you can stop and grab a snack before making your way back down the winding road. The highway is open to traffic through mid-October, so plan your trip accordingly and bring layers, as it is at least 10 degrees cooler at the summit.
Cobble Hill, located on the shores of Mirror Lake, offers a short hike—perfect for beginners—with direct overhead views of all the region's beautiful fall foliage.
Just a few steps from the property, the 2.7-mile paved loop around the lake provides a perfect opportunity to see the foliage from the lake’s perspective. Cast on the glassy, still water are stunning reflections of red maples.
Oktoberfest on Whiteface Mountain blends Bavarian traditions with stunning Adirondack fall foliage as the backdrop. This year, Oktoberfest is planned for September 26–27, and purchasing advance tickets is recommended. Enjoy live bands and entertainment, as well as family-friendly activities such as pumpkin carving, face painting, and lawn games. Feast on brats, pretzels, and schnitzel, and wash it down with a refreshing beverage from one of the biergartens.
A must-visit celebration that takes place every October during peak foliage season at the Olympic Jumping Complex, the Flaming Leaves Festival is the only place you can watch winter athletes launch off an Olympic tower into a stunning sea of red and orange maples. Enjoy live entertainment, food, drinks, and an all-around good time. While there, ride the Skyride up to the base of the tower for a 360-degree view of the fall foliage. This year's event will take place on October 10–11.
